Repetitive muscle contractions from facial expressions like squinting, frowning or brow furrowing can result in what is known as dynamic wrinkles. Blocking the nerves that cause muscles to tense up or contract reduces the appearance of these facial wrinkles. Botox® Cosmetic is a therapeutic agent that works by relaxing muscles at motor nerve endings (or the nerves leading to muscles). This treatment has been in commercial use for over a decade with thousands of patients throughout the world.
Treatment areas with Botox® Cosmetic:
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines between the brows (glabellar lines)
- Jawline contouring
- Calf slimming
What is it?
Formed by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria, Botox® Cosmetic is a purified form of protein. Although derived from bacterium, it does not travel to other parts of the body when applied properly in small amounts to the specific treatment areas described above.
How does it work?
A small quantity of Botox® Cosmetic is injected into the muscle that contracts to form a dynamic wrinkle on your face. As the muscle relaxes, the nerve signal is blocked from reaching the treated area and the dynamic wrinkle or crease overlapping the muscle is smoothed over.
Does Botox® Cosmetic freeze my facial muscles?
Botox® Cosmetic does not freeze your face but simply relaxes the overactive muscle
below the surface of the dynamic wrinkle. Additional facial expressions and muscle movements continue to be active.
Are the effects long-lasting?
On average, Botox® Cosmetic usually lasts 3-4 months, with a new injection required after this time period. The effects may start to last longer after receiving subsequent treatments.
Are these treatments safe?
Botox® Cosmetic has been successful and safely used in opthamology for over a decade and over six years for wrinkle treatment. For the amount of Botox® Cosmetic used for treating wrinkles, the most common adverse effects are short-lived and limited to the injection area.
Can anyone benefit from Botox® Cosmetic treatment?
Restrictions concerning Botox® Cosmetic treatments are few with the exception of pregnant patients, or those who are nursing or suffer from a neurologic disorder. Patients should always consult with their doctor to determine whether they are a good candidate for Botox® Cosmetic treatments.
What happens during treatment?
A fine needle is used to inject Botox® Cosmetic directly into the muscle causing the wrinkle. Most often compared to the sensation of an insect bite, pain is minimal because the needle used to administer the small amount of liquid injection is so thin. While some patients may experience slight bruising at the injection area, make-up can be used to conceal this temporary skin discoloration. Without the need for sedation or a local anesthetic, patients are often able to drive home or back to work after treatment without any assistance.
